Folliculitis Decalvans is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the hair follicles and can cause permanent scarring hair loss. This home support plan has been designed to help create the healthiest possible scalp environment, reduce unnecessary irritation and support your scalp alongside regular professional monitoring. It is not a replacement for medical assessment or treatment.

Your New At Home Routine

1. Wash Your Scalp Regularly

One of the biggest misconceptions is that washing less often helps. For many people with inflammatory scalp conditions, allowing excess oil, sweat and product build-up to remain on the scalp may contribute to irritation.

Aim to wash your scalp every 1–2 days, or after heavy sweating.

Massage the shampoo gently using your fingertips never your nails.

Rinse thoroughly.

Avoid leaving shampoo residue on the scalp.

Ensure to use a PH balancing shampoo that has a PH balance of 4.5 to 5.5 such as the Sukin Natural Balance range ​

2. Choose Gentle Haircare

Where possible, choose products that are:

Silicone free – some silicones can leave a coating on the hair and scalp, leading to product build-up in some people.

Sulphate free – harsh cleansing agents can strip the scalp's natural protective oils and may increase irritation in sensitive scalps.

Paraben free – while parabens are considered safe in cosmetics by many regulators, some people prefer to avoid them if they have sensitive skin. Choosing simpler formulations may help reduce the chance of irritation for some individuals.

Look for products designed for sensitive or easily irritated scalps rather than heavily fragranced cosmetic shampoos.

3. Avoid Heavy Styling Products

Avoid:

• Heavy waxes

• Thick oils

• Pomades

• Dry shampoo

• Hair fibres

• Excessive hairspray

These products can increase build-up and make it harder to keep the scalp clean.

 

4. Never Pick or Scratch

Avoid scratching or removing crusts.

Although it may provide temporary relief, scratching can increase inflammation, damage hair follicles

and increase the risk of infection and permanent scarring. If you feel the need to scratch the irritated area, just gently tap it with your fingers for some relief. We also recommend the brand Noughty 97% Natural Scalp Tonic. this can be used daily in between washes for irritation relief. 

 

Weekly Scalp Care

• Wash hair brushes weekly.

• Change pillowcases every 2–3 days.

• Wash hats regularly.

• Clean phone screens often.

• Keep nails short and clean.

• Wash hair after excessive sweating.

 

Lifestyle Support Stress

Many inflammatory conditions become worse during periods of stress.

Try to include:

• Good sleep

• Gentle exercise

• Relaxation

• Fresh air

• Mindfulness or breathing exercises

 

Stay Hydrated

Aim for approximately 2 litres of water daily unless your healthcare professional has advised otherwise.

Healthy skin begins with healthy hydration.

 

Nutrition

Eating a balanced diet supports overall skin and hair health.

Aim to include:

✓ Colourful fruit and vegetables

✓ Healthy fats including olive oil and avocado

 

Vitamins & Minerals That Support Healthy Hair and Skin

These nutrients are important for normal hair, skin and immune function:

• Protein

• Iron (only if deficient)

• Zinc

• Vitamin D

• Vitamin B12

• Folate

• Biotin (only if deficient)

• Selenium

• Omega-3 fatty acids

• Vitamin C to support collagen formation and iron absorption

Supplements should ideally only be taken if a deficiency has been identified or on the advice of a healthcare professional, as taking high doses unnecessarily can sometimes be harmful.

 

Foods to Limit if You Notice They Trigger Flare-Ups

There is no specific diet proven to treat folliculitis decalvans. However, some people notice their inflammatory skin conditions worsen after certain foods.

You may wish to reduce:

• Highly processed foods

• Sugary snacks and drinks

• Excess alcohol

• Frequent fast food

If you suspect a particular food worsens your symptoms, keep a food and symptom diary rather than eliminating large food groups without professional advice.
